We continue our sermon series on the Names of God with a strange one: Melchizedek. Not much is known about this mysterious figure that shows up in Genesis and Psalms and is explained in Hebrews. It is not a commonly called upon name of God which is exactly why we should take time to understand it.
Melchizedek means “King of Righteousness” in Hebrew. He shows up as both a King and a Priest. Melchizedek is a Christophany, a pre-incarnation appearance of the Messiah. He is without beginning or end. He is Jesus and he always shows up when we need him.
This week, I challenge you to write the name Melchizedek somewhere you will see it (mirror, refrigerator, etc.). Know that when you pray in Jesus’ name, you are praying to him in the order of Melchizedek. Trust in his righteousness and peace. Trust in his intercession for you as your King and Great High Priest.
Join me in praying this prayer in the week to come:
Jesus, you are my King of Righteousness. You are my King of Peace. You are my Great High Priest, in the order of Melchizedek forever. Make me holy like you. Give me your peace. Intercede for me, my Savior. Amen.
Blessings,
Rev. Lauren Green Yates, MDiv.
