Am I a Servant?

Updated: 13 hours ago

When I was in college, I had a short-lived career as a waitress. I learned quickly that the food service industry was not for me. “You didn’t want tomatoes? Okay, pick them off then,” said younger Lauren. Thank goodness for future sanctification and a deeper understanding of the importance of having a servant’s heart. To be a servant, one must humble themselves and look after the needs of others, as unto the Lord.

Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, was a great example of a servant. When no one else washed Jesus’ feet, she came in with expensive perfume, wiped his feet with the precious oil and her tears, and dried his feet with her hair. Mary was a true servant. She was ready to humble herself and pour out what was most precious for Jesus because he was worthy.

Are you like Mary? Are you a servant? Could anyone “accuse” you of extravagant servitude? As followers of Jesus, may we be known as servants of God and servants of others.

This week, our church considered question number 14 of the Global Methodist Church Catechism: “Did Jesus Christ bodily rise from the dead?” This is the defining doctrine at Austin Global Methodist Church. Our answer to this important question is: “Yes! On the third day he arose again according to the Scriptures.” If you would like to learn more about the resurrection of Jesus, study Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-11, 36-43, John 20:1-17, 27, Acts 2:22-36, I Corinthians 15:3-8, and I Peter 1:3 in your personal devotions.

Next week is Palm Sunday. Invite all your friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors. Let’s “Pack the Pew” this Palm Sunday. Come prepared to worship King Jesus!

Now go forth and be the servant Christ calls you to be.

Blessings,

Rev. Lauren Green Yates, MDiv.

Pastor of Austin Global Methodist Church
